Promoting Voluntary Land Conservation

Our Board of Directors,  staff members, and volunteers work passionately to promote conservation. From the Myrtle Point/Powers area to Brookings/Harbor, Wild Rivers Land Trust purchases at-risk properties, holds conservation easements, educates citizens about voluntary land conservation, and introduces landowners to contemporary methods they can use right now to protect their treasured ownership in perpetuity.

A Wild Salmon Stronghold  Gets Protection!

When WRLT purchased 217-acres of steep native forest from Roseburg Resources Company, a local timber company, it was so that we could conserve the 1½ miles of salmon streams in the Bald Mountain Creek watershed. Bald Mountain Creek is the major producer of Elk River steelhead. In January 2016, we sold the Bear Creek property to the USFS allowing public access to hiking trails, salmon-bearing streams and prime wildlife habitat. The land will be managed alongside old-growth timber forests in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Click Conservation @ Work! to read the story.

Another acquisition, Purple Mountain, was purchased in May 2016 with similar intentions. Not only will this purchase provide preservation of plant and wildlife habitat, it will give the public access to a new area for outdoor recreation, education, hiking, photography and mushroom gathering. Restoration activities to date have included planting of 1200 root rot-resistant Port Orford cedar trees. Thanks to a devoted crew of staff members and volunteers, this will help to reduce erosion and protect downstream habitat for salmon and steelhead.
